Biografie: Michael Hayes I grew up beside the River Liffey in Newbridge County Kildare and have been fascinated by fly One of the really nice aspects of fly tying is sharing skills and tips with others. The great benefit of attending tying events and participating in competitions is that they extend one’s range of skills where otherwise one might stay with a more limited focus. More tyers should take advantage of such opportunities. I’ve found that the very best tyers are the most generous with sharing their skills and experience. I owe a very considerable debt to Ted Malone, Frankie McPhillips, Robert Gillespie, Paul Little, Peter O’Reilly and many others who have shared their expertise with me from time to time. I’m pretty much committed to fly fishing for choice although I enjoy most other types of fishing if fly fishing is not possible. Since Betty and I moved our principal residence to southern Spain, in addition to pursuing native brown trout and black bass, fly fishing for barbel in Andalucia has become a major and most enjoyable new focus. Spain has a marvellous tradition of fly fishing, with literature dating back to 1539 and considerably pre-dating Izaak Walton’s The Compleat Angler first published in 1654. Our membership of ACPES, the major fly fishing and conservation organisation in Andalucia has introduced us to many new friends, talented fly tyers and good anglers such as Alfonso Izco, Alex Ramos and Antonio Lloreda who, with Spanish accents, all speak the universal language of “fly fishing”. |
